چکیده

[1] Tropical East African Lake Tanganyika hosts the Earth’s largest anoxic freshwater body. The entire water column holds over 23 Tg of the potent greenhouse gas methane (CH4). Methane is formed under sulphate poor conditions via carbon dioxide reduction or fermentation from detritus and relict sediment organic matter. Permanent density stratification supports an accumulation of CH4 below the permanent oxycline. Despite CH4 significance for global climate, anaerobic microbial consumption of CH4 in freshwater is poorly understood. Here we provide evidence for intense methanotrophic activity not only in the oxic but also in the anoxic part of the water column of Lake Tanganyika. We measured CH4, C of dissolved CH4, dissolved oxygen (O2), sulphate (SO4 ), sulphide (HS) and the transient tracers chlorofluorocarbon 12 (CFC 12) and tritium (H). A basic one dimensional model, which considers vertical transport and biogeochemical fluxes and transformations, was used to interpret the vertical distribution of these substances. The results suggest that the anaerobic oxidation of CH4 is an important mechanism limiting CH4 to the anoxic zone of Lake Tanganyika. The important role of the anaerobic oxidation for CH4 concentrations is further supported by high abundances (up to ∼33% of total DAPI stained cells) of single living archaea, identified by fluorescence in situ hybridization.

Hydrocarbons Lakes on Titan

Introduction: Titan has a massive atmosphere with a pressure at surface level of ~1.5 bars. In the atmosphere the molecular nitrogen N2 is the dominant constituent (~94 percent) and the methane CH4 is the second most abundant component (~5 percent) [1]. The atmosphere of Titan is photochemically active with an efficient production of ethane, ethylene, acetylene and propane as minor components. ...

Methane release from sediment seeps to the atmosphere is counteracted by highly active Methylococcaceae in the water column of deep oligotrophic Lake Constance.

Methane emissions from freshwater environments contribute substantially to global warming but are under strong control of aerobic methane-oxidizing bacteria. Recently discovered methane seeps (pockmarks) in freshwater lake sediments have the potential to bypass this control by their strong outgassing activity. Whether this is counteracted by pelagic methanotrophs is not well understood yet. We ...

Chemical markers of possible hot spots on Mars

[1] Although there is no evidence of active volcanism on Mars today, ‘‘localized’’ outgassing sources, the hot spots, may not be ruled out. If outgassing does occur somewhere on Mars, water, carbon dioxide, sulfur species, methane, and to a lesser extent, halogens would be the likely molecules of outgassing, based on terrestrial analogs. The sulfur species, methane, and halogens have not been d...

Evolution of Titan and implications for its hydrocarbon cycle.

Measurements of the carbon and nitrogen isotopic ratios as well as the detection of 40Ar and 36Ar by the gas chromatograph mass spectrometer (GCMS) instrument on board the Huygens probe have provided key constraints on the origin and evolution of Titan's atmosphere, and indirectly on the evolution of its interior. Those data combined with models of Titan's interior can be used to determine the ...
